Discussion:
trimming polyline to itself

Hi all.
This might be a stupid one, but all the same:
If an open polyline crosses itself, can I trim it with itself as a
cutting edge? Say a "rectangle" where 2 sides extend beyond the corner.
I'm having no luck so far.

Thx / Sven

I can, with AutoCAD and LT. What software and version are you using?

Considering this is an Intellicad group, I'm guessing he's using Intellicad.

My V6 won't do it, not sure if previous versions did or not. Never noticed
that before.

FWIW, I'm using Cadopia Intellicad 4. Selecting selects the whole
pline (all four segments, drawn as above), and trimming makes the
whole 'trimmed' line segment go away.

This is odd, I did an explode on the pline, selected one of the
lines crossing, trimmed the other line to it, and it didn't work.
(explode turns the pline into a bunch of plain old lines)

I make two crossing lines with 'line' and it wouldn't trim that.

I made two crossing lines with 'pline' and it DID trim that, as I
expected.

With what little I learned back on ACAD 9 (not sure which rev it
was, but it was dos-based), one thing I was told was to always use
plines instead of lines, because plines are more versatile. It also
seems plines work with Intellicad's trim command, but plain old lines
don't. Is this true in ACAD too, or is this an Intellicad limitation?

Is there a (easy) way to 'convert' a line (or several lines) to a
pline (other than drawing a pline over it, snapping to its endpoints
and deleting the original line)?

In Acad at least (it should work in Icad as well but I'm at wrong
computer) I type PEDIT, then select a line. Command line asks "do u
want to turn it into a pline?" Right click for yes, then J for join.
select all the other lines (endpoints must be at same place) and there
u are. A polyline instead of a bunch of simple lines.

Icad does just the same.
