Am using the 98 version of Intelicad, but I typed out PURGE, then got
rid of a host of XREF'd in objects. I get out of the drawing editor,
and Surprize they are back again when I get back in again. Tried this
three times with same drawing. Each time wanting to get rid of
Inserts, LT's, unused layers, and each time after exit, they came
back.

Never had this happen before. Usually once gone, the stay gone.

Am I missing something?

You can't purge xrefs, they have to be detached. Blocks etc defined in
the xref won't go away until the xref is detached.

You are getting something wrong. The XREF can be bound into a
drawing. There is a command for such. They then become essentially an
inserted block. Cannot get rid it these then. I have ERASED those
blocks, then once re-opened, they magically re-appear.

Ah, you didn't say you had bound the xref. Sometimes binding just
doesn't work, specially in Acad imported dwgs (I think it works better
in recent Icad versions). Assuming it did work properly, other blocks
might be nested and need a couple of purges to dig down to them.
